GEAR UP
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs

If you’re a student, parent, guardian or educator, you can increase college and career readiness with GEAR UP WATERBURY, a federally-funded grant program that helps empower local students to think beyond what they see today. GEAR UP CT provides the tools, resources and programs to help students starting as early as middle school to increase their success in education.

Through GEAR UP, we currently serve the class of 2025 across the City of Waterbury at Crosby High School, Kennedy High School, Wilby High School, State Street School, Enlightenment School, Waterbury Arts Magnet and Waterbury Career Academy.

GEAR UP is...

A partnership program between Connecticut State Colleges & Universities, the Waterbury Public Schools, and Naugatuck Valley Community College to support current 10th graders. We aim to increase the number of students prepared for and ready to succeed in college!

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarship opportunities will be made available upon successful completion of the program &
completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). GEAR UP will help you find local, national, and sponsored scholarships based on your individual needs.

NEWS IN GEAR: STEM CAREER SHOWCASE

GEAR UP Waterbury student’s engaged with Connecticut based STEM professionals through hands-on activities at the CT Science Center. Students were able to explore the Science Center while interacting with STEM Educators and Professionals. Presenters from Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, COX Communications, Electric Boat, UConn Health and Dominion energy inspired students to pursue STEM jobs while highlighting exciting STEM opportunities here in their home state.  

The Connecticut Science Center’s STEM Career Connections initiative represents a deepening commitment to the illumination of STEM skills and the pathways available in Connecticut. The Science Center strives to build a diverse workforce, equipped with strong critical thinking and communication skills, and their team oriented mindset necessary to succeed in STEM careers.
